Itinerary
Day 1 & 2 Depart USA, Arrive Florence, Italy (L,D)
Day 3 Orientation and Introductions (Florence)
Florence is truly one of the amazing cities of Italy. Some of the greatest works by Michelangelo are found here. We visit the Academia and view the majestic David, then to the Duomo where the Gates of Paradise on the Baptistery are not to be missed. Then to the Basilica of Santa Croce with its’ walls lined with the tombs of Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Galileo and Bardi. (B,L,D)
Day 4 Florence
We continue our exploration of the wonders that Florence has to offer us. (B,D)
Day 5 Assisi
Walled Assisi is miraculous with its many churches including Santa Maria Maggiore, San Pietro and St Clare. St Francis was born here and work began on his basilica two years after his death. It's a magnificent tribute to the patron saint of animals, with frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue and Martini. Overnight in Rome. (B,D)
Day 6 Rome
All roads lead to Rome…for thousands of years tourists and pilgrims have journeyed to the city of seven hills on the Tiber. Rome has unarguably one of the richest, fullest histories of any city on earth. We stroll along the Tiber and enter Vatican City where we visit the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, world famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling frescoes and The Last Judgment. We also visit St. Peter’s Square and Basilica where Michelangelo's "Pieta" is but just one of many highlights. An afternoon walking tour to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps is also available. Overnight in Rome. (B,L,D)
Day 7 Rome
Morning tour begins with a visit to the Coliseum followed by a walking tour through the ancient Roman Forum where we learn about the great Roman Empire. We also visit the Palatine Hill, home to the all powerful emperors. Overnight Rome. (B,L,D)
Day 8 Free Day (Optional trip to Ostia Antica)
Participants have a choice: spend a day exploring Rome on your own or take a short metro ride to Ostia Antica, one of the best preserved Roman archaeological sites. Once the buslting port of Rome, the town was covered by river deposits and preserved until modern times. The cost of this excursion will be $25 for interested students. Overnight Rome. (B)
Day 9 Rome
On our final day in Rome, we travel along the Appian Way and visit the Catacombs and recount the early days of the emerging church in Rome. Then we visit the church of St. Paul Outside the Walls, the traditional site of Paul's burial and one of the four Papal basilicas. We end our time in worship, thanking God for Paul and other great man of faith. The afternoon and evening will be free for personal exploration, shopping and farewells. (B,L,D)
